Westminster, MD, Tuesday, May 26, 2026 – As part of the America 250 anniversary celebration,

Carroll County Government, in partnership with seven county municipalities, announces the launch of the “Journey Through 250 Years of Local History” webpage showcasing the rich history, culture, and character of seven cities and towns through StoryMaps. The new project is available now!

The 250th town StoryMaps were created using ESRI’s StoryMaps platform to showcase historic sites across Carroll County through an interactive digital experience. Each location features a written narrative paired with an optional audio recording, allowing users to explore history in the format they prefer. Visitors can scroll through descriptive story cards that automatically guide the map from site to site or freely navigate the map to discover points of interest at random.

Carroll County Economic Development collaborated with the Carroll County Downtowns organization to refine the idea. Carroll County Government’s GIS Division provided technical expertise and support to make local history accessible and engaging for residents, students, and visitors. Users can explore curated content for county municipalities.

Each Town StoryMap highlights the unique landmarks, heritage, and scenic character of its community. The public can explore local monuments, plaques commemorating pivotal moments, historic homes and public buildings, architectural features, and much more. Together, these StoryMaps bring the historical elements of each municipality to life, revealing the broader, vibrant tapestry of Carroll County’s contributions to both Maryland’s and the nation’s history.

President of the Board of County Commissioners Joseph Vigliotti shared, “That we celebrate our nation’s historic 250th anniversary is a testament to the American way of life, and a reflection of the millions of Americans who have contributed to that history.  Many of those Americans were citizens of Carroll County, and the StoryMap allows us to share the experiences of the places and people who helped to write our American story.”

“This project brings our shared story to life in a way that is both educational and inspiring,” said Denise Beaver, Director of Carroll County Economic Development. “As we celebrate 250 years, the Carroll County StoryMap gives residents a chance to connect with the places and people who shaped our communities—and invites a new generation to discover our history.”

The StoryMap is available free to the public. To view the Carroll County 250 StoryMap, visit: https://carrollcountytourism.org/experience-history/

Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore the map, learn more about these communities, and participate in upcoming 250th anniversary events and activities. The Carroll 250 webpage lists county events and is available here.
